'B' holiday part 2: The Land of Smiles

It's the time of the year again when it's a must to make my annual pilgrimage to Bangkok. But this time round, it's no longer just for shopping indulgence (Yes, I know this sounds disbelievingly true). I'm glad that it has been an enriching and educational trip, in which we managed to get a glimpse of what's village lifestyle for the people living in Thon Buri - a former capital of Bkk, situated along the Chao Phraya River (shall dwell more into depth later in the post). If you asked me, one thing I like about Bkk is their hospitality. Despite having some unsuccessful and awkward conversations, we were kept entertained by a jovial taxi-driver on our way to the hotel. For the first time, I felt so illiterate and only be able to manage with simple greetings such as "sawadee-ka", "kob khun ka". My vocabulary bank has never felt this poor, but you can never speak the same for my bkk guru bf. To say that I'm impressed with his command of the Thai language is such an understatement. We arrived at bkk on the day of our anniversary. Prior to the date, baby made reservation at Sirocco which boasts of a magnificent view and an exquisite Mediterranean menu. For the sake of be warned and be told, dinning at the restaurant is gonna burn a major hole in your pocket and I have a real bone to pick with the scrutiny of the staffs at the ground floor, making sure that you adhered to their dress code strictly. Nonetheless, I would still recommend for one to visit this place at least once and soak in the city skyline. All bright-eyed and chirpy in the early morning, we set off on an impromptu excursion with the local guide. We went on board a longtail boat which cruised us through the canals and introduced to us the communities living on them. Along the way, we disembarked at a snake farm in Thonburi and were treated to a mind-blowing 20 minutes performance. More interestingly, see in contrast the slum and luxurious villa neighbouring each other. In short, the trip was definitely an eye-opener for us and a welcome change to the city bustling traffic snarl.
Dubbed as the largest aquarium in South East Asia, we decided to visit Siam Ocean World, located at the basement of Siam Paragon. After an impressive tour of the attraction, we reckoned that it's gonna give our dear ol'Sentosa Underwater World a run for its money.
It's 'Spot the difference' time! Bangkok houses many of my favourite shopping haunts, such as The Platinum Mall, MBK and of course, Chatuchak. That being said, the sun is my kryptonite. The weekend market was notoriously hot and we had to make countless stops for drinks/fuel food to recharge and rehydrate. Check out our thirsty and tired faces above. haaas. We were still emitting heat when we returned back to our hotel. It was also a sweet coincidence to bump into friends there too. Speaking of how small the world is =) Anyhow, we combed almost the whole area and were satisfied with our loots. So, you can imagine at the end of the day, our energy were all snapped up, and money too!
It feels good to be back to my pillow and bed again.
Alright, that's the end of my travelogue. *huff puff* Korea/ Japan next year? =) Labels: travel

To baby love, thank you for all the precious memories to date. More recently, your effort to arrange our anniversary dinner in a gorgeous costly setting. Till date, I can never apprehend the essence of time as it grabs us by the wrist and pulls us in all directions. While we can't fathom what's coming or lurking behind every path, the key here is to make the best out of these tests. Undeniably, we had our fair share of tumultuous days which I don't dare to imagine further. If there's anything in the past which has taught me, it's to cherish every moment with you. Because it's always better when we are together. I love you. Labels: love

'B' holiday part 1: The Island of Gods

Yes, I'm back!! Miss me? Just when I thought I won't get accustomed to the lifestyle in Bali, I found myself sunshine basking in the tranquility and homespun culture of what the island had to offer. Small it might be, but you will be amazed at its huge prominence as a tourist attraction. From ribbons of beaches to temples sprouting at every corners to pesky street vendors to starry starry nights to dolphin swimming to random stop by a roadside stall for grapes from a woman in the midst of breastfeeding her child. *oops* In short, Bali was amazingly great which I couldn't have asked for anything more. Not too bad for my virgin trip to the country =) I love our recluse at Lovina where we stayed as they offer a laid back idyll experience. This is definitely the perfect beach destination if you love to have some hedonistic peace. However, if you are craving for something at the end of the spectrum, Kuta's hustle bustle might satisfy your social whirl. An interesting note on Lovina is their au-natural stretches of back volcanic sand beaches. Another once-in-a-lifetime experience which I enjoyed the most was swimming with the dolphins. Quite a painful one though. While you might think that they are such docile animals, don't be surprised at how seemingly playful and horny they can be at times. I got poked, footpushed, turned and swirled. There were times when it was impossibly difficult for me to swim back shore and the crew had to pull me in. So embarassing. Nonetheless, I would love to dolphin-nap them home, despite the fact that they gave me two 'bruise lee' on the leg. Because the dolphins are too adorable!! Hello there! We also had fun renting a scooter to get around places and had to make random stops for directions asking when we got lost. However, if you decides to explore Bali by traveling North-South or vice versa, it's advisable to hire a local driver as the drive through the mountains can be quite perilous and rough. But, you will be rewarded with the surprising panoramas with each bend and be awed by the beautifully patched paddy fields. While you can't expect to dine like kings and queens, you can get a decent menu at affordable prices over a cozy candle-light ambience. So romantic! For an unblocked view of sunset and the wide-span ocean, I would highly recommend Sea Breeze Cafe at Central Lovina. In fact, I've already marked it down as one of my must-visit places in Bali =) Till then Bali....
Next stop: Bangkok!! Labels: travel

Luckily, I managed to steal in some quality time for a good movie fix before departure. This film adaptation I have been wanting to watch ever since I read the book. The movie cleverly conflates the tensions within a family and a cancer-stricken teen craving for normalcy. The heart-tugging plot is definitely a keeper. This tissue weepie was elevated with its evoking emotional conversations which made me an inevitable victim. Bring along your hankies. Don't say I didn't warn you. I took time off to drop by Caine's and have my hair fix too. But this time round, I don't have my favourite girl for company =( Anyhow, it's really good to have a hairdresser friend cum 'kopi' buddy who knows your hair needs and wants anytime. He was in a good mood to give me a temporary curl too. Hello curly wurly Proper holiday write-ups once I've sorted the pics and video clips. I'm still pretty much in my holiday funk =) Labels: clips, Me time

Don't you just love it when you can finally take time off for relax, recuperate and rejuvenate? The career embarkment has been quite challenging and can be plagued by a farrago of acute situations which can catch one off guard. But the silver lining is that it helps me to learn from experience and not get burned. Time's a rolling by altogether too quickly. Who would have thought that I have already clocked one year and four months of work? Soon, December will come which means it's time again for resolution-making and evaluation of our live story. Of course, and Christmas wishing too =) In the meantime, please excuse me while I live in reverie. Don't miss me~!!!! Labels: travel

Back in time

It was a turn-off-your-brain evening when we had our outdoor movie fix again. This reminds me, it's been a good long time since we last stepped into a theatre. Anyhow, we managed to get the first row and had an unblocked view of the show. With a retro night theme, we were brought back in time to the 80s with Ghostbusters mounting on the big inflatable screen. From the film, it's remarkable to see how talents in the movie-making industry have progressed and improved through the years. And just for the record, I thought ghosts from the past were more adorable and spoony (I'm referring to the oh-so- chewable lovable stay puft marshmallow man =p) All in all, I love the screwy entertainment and bank of comical taglines from the movie. Old school is such love =) Labels: flicks, love

Who let the dogs out?

Finally, it's the day we have been waiting for since the commencement of Casper's basic obedience training course. *whew*
Admittedly, it has been a hell lot like a roller-coaster ride. I can still vividly remember what a little tyke he was on his first lesson. If you didn't know better, we looked like the abusive parents who had to insanely yanked the leash for him to get walking. There's also the ostrich-head-in-hole moment when he decided to kick a fuss by letting out a plaintive cry and refused to budge. His rather introvert character also earned him very few bowwow friends.
Now, he managed to make us his proud parents by executing simple sit-stay-heel routines. While we need no acrobatic dog who can perform high-flying feats, the ability to observe basic discipline commands and exudes an air of docility are great comfort to us. Slowly and surely, his classmates began to see the charm in him too and started meshing around. There's the golden retriever, maltese, cavalier king charles and sheltie. Even the owners are reveling in the great camaraderie. Guess what, I'm already looking forward to our next outing!
Oh, before I forgot to mention, much credit goes to the bf who took things in his pride and trained diligently with Casper. What a fine father and son tag team =) Mama, can I sleep now? Labels: casper

Beat it

Just like the tagline promised, Stomp 09 was indeed "Fresher Faster Funnier!". Never had I thought that one can derived so much fun and adrenaline rush out of whacking, beating, snapping and drumming. Just the right vibe for convivial entertainment! Now, where did mumsie keep that broom of hers? From match-box to rubber pipes to wooden poles to tractor tyres to household sinks to newspapers to wooden poles. In short, they left no things untouched. The talented drummer-dancers team wowed us over with their brilliant choreographed rhythmic works and feel-good camaraderie on stage. There were a few moments in which all of us were drawn into their up-beat action for a more enthusiastic performance. Oh boy, I love the interactions! Ichiban Boshi With rhythms still pulsing hard in our chests, even the tummies got inspired and were drumming hard too. So without a second thought, we made a beeline to our fav after-show Jap restaurant. I have to say the place does offer quality Japanese cuisine and an unpretentious ambience to boot. What a perfect excuse for us to just relax and chill out for a couple of hours.
More juice coming up for the next post: Casper's graduation!!!

Never forgotten

Nothing beats a train ride home like none other. Amidst the mundanities of my everyday, battling the peak hour crowd at the train station and not getting squashed by the sliding doors are some of the feats I had to overcome. That's why I'm pretty droopy for any other things and adds on to the insentient body counts in the train. Yet today, I became bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at a familiar face as she stepped right in front of me and called "Senior!" Gosh, it's been sucha looooooong time! So there, unexpectedly, I've gotten myself a companion on a free stake. We chatted throughout the entire journey and found that despite having more than a decade passed, some things simply don't change. Our passion for music, for example, and how those grueling band days helped morphed us into characteristical individuals. The moral of the story: be careful the next time you dozed off on your train ride home. Because you'll never know who you'd bump right into!Thank you J for remembering =) Labels: nostalgia
